Unity in the Midst of Chaos

Martin Luther King Jr.: “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”

In the aftermath of the recent riots and the surge of racist propaganda, it’s essential for artists and creatives as a whole to stand firm in our belief and values that underpin our creativity. The turbulence of these times calls for a response rooted in love, truth, and unity. We are responsible for how we use our creative talents to combat hatred and division. In my own walk I am compelled to not conform to the culture but pursue a heavenly ideal.

To understand the current climate of division, can I tell you a story from the bible. In Genesis 11, mankind, unified in language and purpose, sought to build a tower reaching the heavens. Mankind wanted to strike back at YAHUHA (Hebrew rendering of the Tetragrammaton YHWH)for the flood. They felt justified and allowed emotions to rule their heads. As a result, their language was confused, causing them to scatter and form different tribes and tongues. This division was not to perpetuate hatred but to cut negative alliances.

What is the Source of Division?

Today’s divisions are manipulated by those in power to control and exploit for financial gain. I have not heard our leaders voice concern for those who may be gripped by fear or to those whose anger may lead to violent retribution. By instilling fear and hatred, they maintain their grip on society. But we are called to recognise these tactics and respond with the truth that we are all one.

Nelson Mandela: “No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.”

How do we standup without dividing further?

Standing up against racism and propaganda without dividing society requires a balanced approach rooted in love and understanding. Instead of reacting with anger or hostility, we must respond and engage in compassionate dialogue, listening to the concerns and experiences of the manipulated but never compromising truth.

Do we have shared values and common goals? Is there common ground and can we build bridges?

I love the sermon on the mount, blessed are the peacemakers, advocating for justice while maintaining a sense of strength and belonging. Creative expressions are necessary, whether through art, music, writing, or performance can serve as powerful tools to highlight issues and inspire unity without inciting further division. Let us remember that our ultimate goal is to develop a culture where we align with the truth. To many today believe their opinions are facts.

Responding to Fear with belief
  • Fear is a tool used to control and divide. Responding to fear requires a combination of belief, wisdom, and proactive actions.
  • My belief is my anchor, keeping me stable during the storms. One of my favourite verses is John 14:27, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” I pray and meditate on these promises to find inner peace.
  • Fear often stems from misinformation or a lack of understanding. We must educate ourselves on the facts, separating truth from falsehood. This helps to dispel myths and reduce anxiety.
  • Surround yourself with supportive and balanced individuals. Share your fears and concerns, and listen to theirs. Together, you can offer mutual encouragement and strength.
  • Channel your fear into constructive activities. Use your creative talents to address the issues causing fear, whether through art, music, writing, or other forms of expression. This not only helps to manage your own fears but also inspires others to find hope and courage.
  • Maintain a healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise, a balanced diet, and sufficient rest. Engage in activities that bring joy and relaxation, helping to reduce overall stress levels.

By responding to fear with faith, truth, community, action, and self-care, we can transform our fears into opportunities for growth and positive change.

Audre Lorde: “It is not our differences that divide us. It is our inability to recognize, accept, and celebrate those differences.”

Countering Hatred with Love

Hatred breeds more hatred, whatever you sow that you will reap. As creatives, we have a unique ability to counteract this through our art. Maya Angelou, poet and civil rights activist, once said, “Hate, it has caused a lot of problems in the world, but it has not solved one yet.” Use your platform to spread messages of love, power and truth.

Separating Political Agendas from Truth

It’s vital to discern the truth amid political agendas. Many political movements use divisive tactics to achieve their goals. We must stay focused on the truth. As artists, your work has the power to shape culture and influence hearts. Use your talents to create pieces that inspire and challenge the status quo.

Bob Marley, used his music to promote peace and unity. Norman Rockwell’s painting “The Problem We All Live With,” which depicts Ruby Bridges’ historic walk to an all-white school, played a significant role in the Civil Rights Movement. James Baldwin, said, “Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced.” Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “Hamilton” reimagined the American founding narrative through a diverse cast, promoting the idea that history belongs to all of us.

Change begins within our communities. Build networks of support among fellow creatives. Share resources, collaborate on projects, and support each other’s efforts.

Work with creatives from different fields to amplify your message. A joint project between musicians, visual artists, and writers can create a more comprehensive and impactful statement.

Eleanor Roosevelt: “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.”

Use Social Media Responsibly

Social media is a powerful tool for spreading your message. Use it to share your work, highlight positive stories, and challenge harmful narratives. Be mindful of the content you share and strive to promote truth and understanding.

In conclusion, as artists and creatives, you hold the power to inspire change and promote unity. Stand firm in your faith, counter fear with courage, and respond to hatred with love. Use your talents to uplift and motivate others. Remember, we are one people, created in the image of YAHUAH, and together, we can overcome the forces that seek to divide us. Let your art be a testament to the truth.
